Some things are best left where they stopped. Sometimes a little sooner.
I am hoping that this will contain no spoilers, just in case you haven't seen it yet and think you will still want to when you are done reading this.
I saw The Matrix Resurrections last night and I can only say while it was entertaining it was lacking in many ways. At 148 minutes (almost two and a half hours) in length, it is the longest Matrix movie, and it feels like it.
The Matrix: 136 minutes (2:16)
The Matrix Reloaded: 138 minutes (2:18)
The Matrix Revolutions: 129 minutes (2:09)
The Matrix Resurrections: 148 minutes (2:28)
The good stuff:
Action ✅
Bullet Time ✅
Car/Motorcycle chases ✅
KungFu ✅
The not so good stuff:
Long, boring sections ❌
Confusing time line flow ❌
Implausible situations and responses ❌
An ending that leaves it open for another sequel ❌
I am not the only one, IMDB rates it at 5.7/10 and Rotten Tomatoes rates it at 63%/64%.
I think the basic review summary from Rotten Tomatoes sums it up correctly.
critics consensus
If it lacks the original's bracingly original craft, The Matrix Resurrections revisits the world of the franchise with wit, a timely perspective, and heart.
audience says
The Matrix Resurrections falls short compared to the original, but doesn't skimp on the action or cool visual effects.
While I own the first three on DVD, I think I will be skipping this one, watching it once was enough.
